Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: Petyhorcy

The name petyhorcy was used for medium Lithuanian cavalry armed with spears - counterpart of Polish pancerni cavalry. The name comes from the Piatihorcy (Piatigorcy) - a Caucasian mountain tribe. Petyhorcy cavalry was not much different from cossack style and later panerni cavalry armed with spears. They were able to perform the tasks of light cavalry but as they carried spears or lances, they were also able to charge an enemy directly. Petyhorcy wore chainmail, mail hoods and arm guards. It seems that they were not meant to be used for independent breakthrough charges. Rather than that, petyhorcy had roles in support of frontal attacks.
