IS-3 Company (Soviet Union)
(TSBX39)
Some Soviet heavy tank battalions are still armed with the IS-3, rather than the T-10M.
The IS-3 caused significant alarm in the West when introduced in 1945 due to its powerful armament and advanced protection, which combined raw thickness with complex angles. It would first see its first actions during the Sino-Soviet split and subsequent border clashes of the late 1950s. The IS-3 heavy tank’s first main combat action was during the 1956 Hungarian intervention.
The IS-3 underwent a modernisation extension of life program in 1960 and was redesignated the IS-3M. Improvements included a newer 12.7mm DShKM machine-gun, a TVN-2 night vision device for the driver, replacement engines, an air filter system, improved road wheels from the T-10 tank, better external stowage, and dust skirts were added over the suspension.
