Defrocked Priest
(BR205)
At the end of July 1944 the US was experiencing 105mm howitzer ammunition shortages. To counter this they requested that British and Canadian forces stop using the 105mm M7 Priest to help alleviate the shortages. This left both nations with substantial numbers of M7 Priests that would no longer be used. To remedy this, the spare M7 Priests underwent conversions: they were stripped of the 105mm howitzer, mechanically serviced and had the front aperture welded over. They became armoured personnel carriers, able to carry twelve troops with full equipment. They were first used in Operation Totalise south of Caen and subsequently in Canadian attacks on the various Channel ports, operated by the 1st Canadian Armoured Personnel Carrier Squadron.
