75mm Autocar
(BR360)
In Tunisia the British recognised a need for heavy support for recon units when entering defiles and other concealing terrain. It was decided to adopt the US designed M3 75mm GMC, a self-propelled 75mm gun mounted on a half-track.
The British arranged for some under the lend-lease program, but deliveries were too late for use in Tunisia. The initial deliveries came straight from US Army stocks as they were slowly replacing their M3 GMCs with M10s. For example, the Royal Canadian Dragoons received ex-US 75mm Autocars in Italy. They were issued to the Heavy Troop of each Squadron and used until the end of the war.
They were used as heavy support in Armoured Squadrons and first saw action in Italy lending their heavy fire to the armoured cars.
