The average Italian infantrymen were conscripts with little enthusiasm for Fascist expansionism. However, they found themselves fighting hard in many theatres of World War II, far from home, and in extreme climates.
The Italian Army's equipment was somewhat outdated, if reliable, and the officer class were often careless with their men's conditions.
